We all know that horrible scenario surrounding public transport where you often wait patiently for a bus/train to arrive only to have two arrive at the simultaneously ages later. Almost the same thing can be said here with Rock Band 2. As I alluded to in my Rock Band review here due to EA’s distribution of the game and instruments worldwide Australians have been dealt a raw deal waiting for that game only to have Rock Band 2 still to release in the very near future. Thankfully for us gamers in a PAL region the game has already released in the UK and therefore is readily obtainable to those import savvy and bordering on chronically impatient… I for one am in this category.

To those still waiting patiently it is well worth the wait, particularly if you already own Rock Band. Whilst it may seem on paper like just an arbitrary upgrade with a new lick of paint the platform ethos Harmonix has instilled means that you will want to purchase this sequel and then perhaps deliberate over whether to sell the original straight after. The reason behind this is simple; all download content between the two games is shared and cross compatible. In addition to this for the measly sum of 400 MS points you can download all the songs from the original Rock Band bar three (namely “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, “Run To The Hills” by Iron Maiden and “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath) which have been restricted due to licencing issues. For this reason alone and that fact that everything you can do in Rock Band is still possible in its sequel the only reason you’d hold onto Rock Band upon owning Rock Band 2 is to be able to play these three songs. Is it worth it? That is entirely up to you.

What this also means is that if you previously owned Rock Band, migrated the set-list and then buy Rock Band 2 you have a total of approximately 140 songs available to play plus you also get a code to download another additional 20 free songs from the marketplace. Not bad for the price of admission and even then that doesn’t include the plethora of songs available as download content for either title.
