Scene It? Box Office Smash is the follow-up to the first Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action movie trivia game on the Xbox 360. Movie buff fans will be glad that this iteration this improves on the formula with the addition of online multiplayer, avatar support and DLC through additional questions to prolong the lifespan of the game. The same Big Button Pad controllers are used (four included) and you can purchase the game on its own if you already have the buzzers from the previous game. These are well built and easy to use with a big coloured buzzer button (which also doubles as a directional pad) and four face buttons lined in sequence with the on-screen multiple choice answers. And infra-red receptor needs to be plugged into the USB port of the console but it’s pretty easy to set up. Alternatively, you can use the Xbox controllers but using the buzzers gives it the all important “quiz game” feel as well as being more intuitive with the on-screen action. Up to four players can play simultaneously but that doesn’t stop you from involving more people by creating teams in your lounge room movie trivia party.

Points are scored from answering questions which cover movies from the past half century including the latest releases in 2008. Scene It? B.O.S. doesn’t just rely on boring text based questions though. It uses images, video clips, promotional posters, sketches, visual clues and a variety of different and entertaining ways to pose its questions. The quicker you are at answering, the more points are scored so it pays to have an itchy trigger finger. You have the option to either play a short game or a long game, being around 20 minutes to 30 minutes long respectively. The format is split into 3 rounds where you get several different question formats within each round. It concludes with a Final round where multipliers are possible and incorrect answers are penalised with a reset of your multiplier. At the end of each round, there are bonus points for things such as fastest buzzer, streaks, as well as bonus points for being bad at the game such most incorrect answers, etc. Although this keeps everyone in the game, sometimes if you’re doing badly in the round it pays to just get answers wrong and be slow to buzz in so you can get the bonus points. This is a little unfair on the high-achievers and there should be an option to turn this off. Plus due to the fact that questions are multiple choice, sometimes it just pays to buzz in early and take a guess depending on the type of mini-game you’re playing, where the answers sometimes fill in the gaps on the clues. There is no penalty for getting a wrong answer in the default mode. So to stop the game being a buzz-in spam fest I suggest the first thing you do is create a custom game and set the option to penalise incorrect answers. Nevertheless no matter what format you play, the games are usually close and the arguments are always high. All good things for a party game.
