The Terminator franchise is no stranger to people all around the world in its cinema form. A cult sci-fi classic since the 80's, Terminator has spawned 3 sequels (including the new Salvation movie) A tv series, toys and of course a number of video games. Whilst the movies have received generally positive reviews, the games of the franchise have often left mouths of gamers everywhere dry, savouring something that does the franchise justice. Terminator Salvation is the first Terminator game on the current crop of consoles and whilst it isn't a complete failure you may wish to ready the water as this game will not cure a dry mouth.
For starters the game is not actually based on the story of the movie. This is not necessarily a bad thing for developers to do as often games that follow movies will have plot holes and moments where gameplay can be incredibly boring. Developer GRIN has chosen to set their game two years before the new film. The game follows a very small chapter (a day to be precise) in the life of a young, strong willed and ever so courageous John Connor who is simply an outspoken foot soldier. Playing as John your mission is one of your own choosing that has you attempting to rescue some allies that have fallen on tough times in their battle against the machines.
Whilst this may seem bizarre that saving a few allies is your end of game goal there are other missions that you will complete along the way whether it be assisting other survivors or clearing a landing zone, however it all feels much the same. To GRINs credit, the premise of the story is rather awesome when you think that everything that happens is only one day in the life of John Connor. The set pieces included could have made for some epic high action battles and scenarios but are overall unflattering as you battle from one section to another down one linear path after another.
