Activision are not shy in milking the old Guitar Hero World Tour cash cow. The first offering on the back of Guitar Hero World Tour was GH: Aerosmith which was greeted with a mediocre reception by gamers. The publishing house received some criticism for releasing full titles when its competitor Rock Band was issuing band specific song packs and albums as downloadable content. Now that Activision has released Guitar Hero Metallica on Australian shores, the third in the Band style World Tour series, is it the tribute to the metal band that it should be? Or are we looking at shameless cashing in on the Guitar Hero franchise?

GH: Metallica is standard Guitar Hero World Tour fare, sing, strum and drum through tracks to achieve high scores and progress your way through to the various venues. It all starts off with Metallica looking to sign up a band (Metallica Jr.) to play support to them at their gigs. The bizarre plot of a Metallica tribute band playing Metallica songs at Metallica concerts forms the vehicle by which you are brought to various venues. There is a slight departure in this Guitar Hero game to previous versions in that you don’t have to play all of the songs to advance to the next venue. Instead, you progress through to subsequent venues by achieving a set total number of stars for your current venue. The song difficulty increases as you advance through venues.

The flavour of presentation of the GH: Metallica is akin to the Aerosmith version. You are presented with a host of Metallica songs as well as a selection of tracks that the band took great influence from. All in all, there are 49 songs to get stuck into, 28 Metallica tracks and 21 from other artists, meaning that just of half the tracks on the game are actually by Metallica which some fans may find a little lacking (considering the title), but 28 tracks with full band accompaniment should keep everyone amused. Thankfully, all the classics are there. You can’t help but be drawn in when playing along to anthems like ‘Sad But True’, ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘No Leaf Clover’ and the slower tempo ‘Nothing Else Matters’.
