Wolfenstein has been around for so long now that it’s virtually a household name for first person shooter fans and gamers alike. The previous title in the series, Return to Castle Wolfenstein (RTCW) set the bar quite high for any future entries with its solid, fast paced single player campaign and its much loved multiplayer options. Now with the latest entry of Wolfenstein in the hands of developer Raven, the question on everyone’s lips is whether it will it be the hit or have the same impact as RTCW.
This ill iteration once again has you playing as agent B.J. Blazkowicz investigating the Nazi’s latest attempt at world domination. Essentially the Nazi’s are attempting to develop new and dangerous weapons using something called Black Sun energy. This all takes place in the heart of Germany at a place called Isenstadt. Wolfenstein is not completely linear and Isenstadt is best thought of as a hub for the game between missions. Throughout the city you can receive extra missions, stock up on ammo from various factions and travel to level locations.
The levels themselves are well paced and look rather attractive showing that the ID tech 4 engine, whilst getting on in years is still quite capable of making some impressive looking eye candy. Throughout the levels there is always something happening whether it be an explosion from the typical fps red barrels, exploding objects such as crates to some very impressive effects from some of the higher end weapons. The weapon effects such as fire and the particle beam look excellent as does the damage they do to enemies. The particle beam will vaporise most enemies before your eyes and fire will burn flesh off enemies looking quite painful as one could imagine. Weapons also sound excellent which only helps to add to the overall experience. The music score also complements the excellent visuals. Voice acting is also very solid and complements the action of the game.
