Activision/Neversoft has had their hands on the Guitar Hero franchise for a while now and between themselves and EA/Harmonix they’ve shaped the future of the music game genre as they see fit. Not counting a few spin off games here and there, with “Guitar Hero: World Tour” last year Neversoft followed Harmonix’ lead into the full band spectrum offering up what was a worthy installment but falling short of re-inventing the brand as a whole. With GH5 they’ve now attempting to improve on their personal best and it seems their main goal has been one of accessibility.

GH5 doesn’t do anything particularly new. You still pick up the desired instrument of your choice and play through countless songs, attempting to match the scrolling notes (or lyrics) solo or with friends. The formula is a known one and it’s no different here. What has changed is everything else in the periphery to make it easier to setup, play and in then, enjoy.

Right from the main loading screen players are presented with the option to select the Main Menu, or jump directly into Party Play. If like me you’ve played any of these games with a group of friends this is a blessing. I am sure everyone who has been in a similar situation can at least recall one memory of someone selecting the wrong difficulty, loading the wrong profile or simply not having a clue what they’re supposed to be doing. Essentially all that frustration is removed in GH5… it is as painless as it possibly could be to get four people ready to rock out and everything can be setup in seconds.
