X-Men Legends I and II for the previous generation of consoles would have to be my favourite superhero games of all time. I remember playing them for so many hours not only by myself but also with a friend. So when the original Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was released for Xbox 360 I was pretty excited. However it just didn't pull me in the same was as the X-Men Legends series and I never ended up finishing it. When Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 was announce I didn't get too excited about the prospect of another superhero game in this format. However this would have been a mistake as it turns out M:UA2 is actually a barrel of fun.
The formula is still the same as the previous entry into the series with you controlling one of four superheros (out of the games total number of 24) to partake in battles and level up your heroes to make them even stronger. At the beginning of the game characters will have two of their four superpowers with the others unlocking as you progress through the game. Powers can also be upgraded by earning power points making them even stronger. Throughout the game Ability points will be earnt that can be spent on powers enabling stronger attacks, less stamina use and more resistance to enemy attacks. This has always been a highlight of these games as people tend to like customisation and whilst options for upgrading your hero need to stay within certain guidelines it certainly is fun having some control over these options. If upgrading your character doesn't interest you its nice to know that there is an auto upgrade feature that picks your upgrades for you and lets you get back to the game very quickly.
These type of games always have an element of button mashing and M:UA2 is no different. The controls are very simple with A being fast attack, B the slower heavy attack and Y as jump. Other buttons do serve a purpose as well but these are the main controls. I would have though it would be more natural to default controls to A being jump, X as fast attack and Y as slow as it would simply feel so much better, maybe beta testers thought differently. The different directions on the D-Pad allow you to select one of the other heroes in your party of 4 which keeps things quite simple.
