The Strogg are back. This time their meaner, uglier and stronger than before. But this shouldn’t cause you too many problems as you’ll be locked and loaded with bigger, better and more powerful weapons to blast some alien scum in the latest instalment of the Quake franchise, Quake 4.

Multi Player

This is where it’s at. Fast paced arena style frag feast. Well it’s exactly that yet it’s a bit of a letdown. All other games try something new in sequels yet it’s the same old style. It’s just like Quake 3 only with pretty graphics. Where are all the new game types? Oh well at least there is a kick arse Single Player campaign. Hang on isn’t supposed to be the other way around?

Single Player

The story begins on planet Stroggos, where you, Matthew Kane have crash landed during an attempt to invade the planet. Your first mission is to regroup with Rhino squad, an elite group of marines heading the war against the Strogg.

Even though this game is designed with Multiplayer in mind it doesn’t let down in the single player game one bit. Sure the story line isn’t going to win an Oscar, but which game will? Besides, with fast paced action around every corner, you don’t have time to think too much about the story.

In most of the missions you’ll get to fight alongside members of your squad. Sometimes they can be handy and get stuck in and kick some Strogg butt, while others times they seem to be fighting a different war. You just feel like putting the poor bastards out of your misery. Two types of Marine you want to protect and keep by your side as long as possible, are the Medic’s and Tech’s. Medics will fill your health up after a bloody battle with the Strogg and Techs will do the same for your armour. You can spot these guys from the rest of your squad by the colour of their combat suit. Medic’s are dressed in red and Tech’s in blue.

Many of the original characters like the Berserker and Gunner are back in the sequel with the addition of a few new ones, one awesome looking new baddy is the Stream Protector, a Hybrid Arachnid Droid. Stream Protectors hunt in packs with rocket launchers and flamethrowers. So don’t expect to find just one and these things are tough.

One character that is just annoying is the Sentry. A flying tin can with a head. In relation to all the other characters this one just doesn’t seem to fit in well at all. It looks like a 5 year old came up with the idea.
