You use the weapons to fight off the horde of human like creatures that are lusting for your blood. I say human like, because while they look normal, most of your enemies have a few tricks up their (sometimes non existent) sleeves. Some are just basic druggies, while others slink about on all fours and are extremely quick. There are also some morbidly obese people who take a lot of beating before they go down. This mixture of enemies combined with the pre-scripted events of boxes falling down, lights going off etc help to create a spooky, edgy experience.
In between the hobo hunting, you’ll sometimes have to collect evidence (you’re an FBI agent …… remember?). At certain areas you’re prompted to press the collect evidence button and whatever tool you’re supposed to use will be instantly equipped. You then spend several minutes trying to figure out what you’re supposed to be photographing/collecting/scanning etc. While it sounds “meh” it’s easily the best part of the game. The game could have significantly improved by cutting down the generic shooting/melee combat sections and providing more evidence hunts for the player.
Technically, Condemned is competent but not spectacular. While there are some highlights in the graphics and sound (character models look great), most of it feels like it could have been achieved on the Xbox.
Xbox Live scoreboards are available (brag about how well you bash people?) but no multiplayer exists. That could be forgivable if the game was significantly longer, but as it stands it’s a gaping hole. A basic 4 vs. 4 death match would have at least added some replay value to a $120 game.
If you’re a fan of Monoliths previous works, or just love spooky, horror based thrillers, you might find something to like here. But because of its high price tag and lack of content to justify it, this should only be a rental or bargain bin grab for the majority. A few more months in development, more focus on the detective side of the game and some sort of multiplayer would have been a massive improvement.
XboxZone Score : 8/10
