In 2005, the Xbox 360 was launched on Aussie shores with Project Gotham Racing 3 as a release day title, and it was easily the dominant racing game for the 360 for a considerable amount of time as it was untouched in its graphics and playability. It was a rare release day title in that it was actually brilliant and complemented the next generation hardware perfectly. Such is the games popularity that it even saw a new lease of life being shipped with the Official Xbox 360 steering wheel. Now as the sun is setting on 2007, Bizarre Creations have released the eagerly awaited PGR4, but how can such a quality title be improved? Is PGR4 a genuine successor to its predecessor, or a prettier PGR3?
The first thing you notice about PGR4 that is different to PGR3 is the menu system. You move left to right and highlight various options. Gone is the vertical navigation and annoying screen change. You can select Arcade, Career and Online modes as well as the PGR Shop which is where you purchase your vehicles. Vehicles are rolled into packs that are purchased with Kudos. Kudos is earned in the same way it was in PGR3, by drifting, performing burnouts, nailing perfect corners, clean sections, etc.
You begin PGR4 with the beginners car pack and you quickly see that even on normal level you are left standing on the straights as your opponent’s power past you, but it won’t take long before you have some Kudos to spend on toys in the PGR shop. This can be accessed from the main menu, or after you complete a championship. Buying cars is now a different experience as well. All cars in PGR4 are rolled into packs and buying a pack gives you a selection of vehicles from a global region. Car packs are displayed left to right in order of increasing cost, and a green area indicates the packs that you can afford. Buy a pack, and see your area of affordability decrease. A large tick appears on packs that you own, so there is absolutely no confusion over what cars you do and don’t have. The nice feature of this is that when you own a car pack, you can assign any available colour to a car you select for a race.
