2k Sports returns with NBA2k8 the latest in the series and does not fail to impress, NBA2k8 this year actually steps up from its predecessor in all areas namely in the form of content, fine tuned game play and the over all look and feel of the game. Though the lack of documentation explaining the fine details of the game can make it difficult for new players to get use to the game play. Regardless of this NBA2k8 will impress all fans of the series if not sport nuts in general.
NBA2k8 is jammed packed with different game modes and mini games which increase the replay value immensely keeping you busy for months on end until the next instalment. The is a NBA Blacktop menu option which leads to Street Ball like game modes such as a Three Point shoot-out, Street ball which be either 1 on 1 up to 5 on 5 and the new addition The Dunk Contest. The Dunk contest allows up to four players to show off their best slam dunking tricks earning points after each dunk. The more points at the end of three rounds will win the contest. .
The Slam Dunk Contest isn’t as easy as it seems. There are Three parts to perform the slam dunk (this is different to the general gameplay which is relatively easier) the gather, the in air style and then the Finnish which all needs precision in timing in order to pull off the dunk. The Dunk is performed using the right thumb-stick to perform the gather and in air style and then to Finnish the dunk you must press the right trigger as close as you can at the right spot to finish the dunk. Sounds complicated? It is, luckily for those who aren’t familiar with this style there are slam dunk practise mode where you can familiarise yourself with the technique, once mastered you can perfect tricks, add obstacles to jump over such as cars, chairs and benches and then start winning the slam dunk contests. The Dunk Contest can be performed by up to four human players which can be quite entertaining to say the least.
