Neversoft’s Tony Hawk franchise has had its ups and downs since it first exploded onto the gaming scene in the late 90s with its innovative controls and unique goal based gameplay. Since then the series has been criticised for adding gimmicky elements, totally unrelated to skating, in an attempt to keep the gameplay fresh. With the series now in its ninth iteration with Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground, Neversoft are finally facing some serious competition from EA’s recently released Skate. With this in mind, THPG heralds a return to the series roots with more attention placed on skating, and less on stunts frequently seen on Jackass.
Unlike previous Tony Hawk games, the single player mode of THPG consists of three separate career paths: Career, Rigger and Hard Core. Each path has its own goals and skills you develop as you progress. Career skaters are your pro skaters and are all about precision and being able to continuously nail the same trick. As such, as you progress along the Career path you learn how to use nail-a-trick mode originally introduced in Project 8. This is Bullet-Time for skaters, where the games goes into slow motion and allows you to have precise control over flips and grabs. They have also introduced nail-a-grab and nail-a-manual, both essentially the same but obviously applying to their different situations.
