The Godfather by Electronic Arts is a Saints Row style game which runs along the Mobster theme of The Godfather. Much like The Godfather film, this game is all about earning respect in order to rise through the ranks of the New York City underworld. As a new member of the Corleone Family it is up to you to make a name for yourself as you attempt to take control of a living, breathing New York City. Don’t think the turf war will be easy though. You have four other families in your way who demand just as much respect as you do.

The Godfather game puts you in the role of a fictional yet pivotal character in The Godfather story. As the game progresses, The Godfather story unfolds before your eyes with beautiful cinematic scenes which explain everything to you, including your role in the Corleone family. Before you can jump straight into action you have to sculpt your character (create a Mob Face). Though there is very limited customisation you are still able to make a character which you could very well see play a pivotal role for the Corleone family. As you progress through the game and take over businesses to earn money for yourself and your family, more clothing and accessories become available for you to purchase at anytime, as well as unlocking new hair styles.

Once you have created the Next Don of Dons, you have to learn how to hold your own in hand to hand combat. Electronic Arts has successfully implemented a Fight Night style, total control fighting scheme. Though simplified (this is no boxing game), EA has given the player control of each and every punch. To lay the smack down you must first lock on to your target by holding the Left Trigger, and moving the right thumb stick in an upper direction to perform a quick punch or moving the right thumb stick in a down up motion to perform a power attack (uppercuts). To grab an enemy you must pull and hold the right and left triggers, from here you can kick or even head-butt your enemy by again moving the right thumb stick. In addition to the fighting control scheme you can also drag, swing, throw, slam, garrotte and even toss your enemy over a ledge to dispose of him.

As you progress through the game you level up and earn skill points from which you can upgrade everything from fighting skills to shooting skills as well as athletic abilities. As you apply new points to an area of skill your character becomes better in that area, such as if you upgrade your fighting skills you can perform new manoeuvres and executions or if you upgrade your shooting skill, you can aim with more precision.

The Godfather game would not hold true with out guns blazing. In the game it is your role to silence anyone who deems a threat to you, your family, or your profits. The shooting is handled very well in the game with precision aiming. With precision aiming you have to pull and hold the left trigger to lock onto a target and then move the crosshair by moving the right thumb stick. There will be times during the game where you must not kill a particular target but instead disarm him by aiming for his arms or legs; these are known as weak spots. When the crosshair turns red you’ve locked on to a weak spot and you can now disarm or immobilise the target, by doing this you will also earn some respect. Once you have disarmed or immobilised your opponent you can then walk up to them and perform an execution manoeuvre. There is a different manoeuvre for every gun in the game and they all have their own little mobster touches to them.

Now once you have all the hand to hand combat and shooting down pat it is time for you to prove your worth to the Corleone family as well as make some money on the side. You can follow the story missions by going to The Corleone Families home. From here you will kick off the long and windy story of family, mobsters, murders, respect, deceit and love, all of which ties in nicely to create The Godfather story. Electronic Arts has successfully brought the epic mobster story to the next-gen gaming arena, albeit with a twist, and without any loss of class.

Electronic Arts has also done a good job with creating plenty of activities to keep you busy for a long time, whether it’s through major missions or side objectives. There will never be a dull moment. Through out New York City there are many activities for you to do to build up respect as well as unlock new features. Many of these side objectives are Contract Hits, Extortion Attempts or Bank Heists.
