2K Sports has returned yet again with their latest NHL title. The NHL2k series has been by far, years in advanced of any other NHL game out there in all areas especially gameplay, presentation and depth of content. As each new NHL title in the series comes out we are always looking for the next big feature in gameplay and game modes which will revolutionise our gaming experience. Well this year the gameplay has changed significantly and not necessarily for the better.
When you first play this game, straight away you will notice the control scheme has been totally revamped, initially it feels awkward with the Right and Left bumpers controlling the shooting and passing as well as the left trigger acting as the shot modifier. The shot modifier works by holding down the left trigger and then hitting the left bumper at a certain time depending on what type of shot you want. This doesn’t sound too bad, though it just doesn’t feel right even after a few hours of playing around with it, then again by the time the next instalment of NHL comes out the control scheme would have become second nature.
In addition to the revamping of the control scheme 2K Sports has added a whole new gameplay feature allowing you more control over your player than ever before with the new pro-stick system controlled with the right thumb stick. This system allows you to get stuck in to the face-off battles as well as giving you the control to pull off tricky manoeuvres and put your opponents on show. The pro-stick system is relatively basic to use on the fly whether on offence or defence, simply point the right analogue stick in any direction or in all directions and try to catch out your opponents. The downfall of the pro-stick is that it is not very responsive and feels like it needs to be re-worked and fine tuned already.
