Goal tending has been fine tuned and the A.I finally behaves more realistically, acting on the incoming situations put before them. You will notice at times the goal tenders will come out and challenge incoming potential threats if that is their only option or hold tight to the posts. In addition to the goal tenders being smart they also move more realistically and go all out with their saves, definitely great to watch and adds to the NHL feel. Adding these new animations also makes being the goal tender relatively fun; you can do this simply by pressing the back button. You will now be in control of the goal tender, this adds an intense feeling like never before, and from here you can also control your team mates, giving orders by pressing a direction on the d-pad.

As with all 2KSports titles they always seem to come jam packed with content in the form of game modes and mini games. The ultimate goal is to try and cater for anyone’s style of play and this years NHL2k8 is no different returning with numerous mini games such as in the zone, free for all and freeze tag which is perfect for those who like a break from the serious gameplay. There is also a tournament mode where you can either battle it out with the computer or take on up to four of your mates to find out who is the best of the best. Though 2kSports prides themselves on their sports games franchise modes and NHL2k8 features the most in-depth franchise mode for a NHL title going around.

The NHL2k8 franchise mode in one word is amazing. This mode puts you in total control NHL team, you control every aspect of that team from the run on side to trading and signing of players to managing injuries to managing your staff. Though it is not as easy as it may seem, as your season progresses you are required to fulfil the owners requirements, win plenty of matches, win major tournaments and surpass your last years performance. In addition to this you must also manage your players, keeping their morale at a positive. This is done by ensuring they all get adequate play time, that the superstars perform like superstars and ensuring your rookies are being well trained and managed. Keeping your team morale positive is the key to successful performances if a certain player is not happy they will play sloppy, they will miss those easy shots or their defence will not be their best.
