Remember The Simpsons? Well they’re back, in video game form. For many, many years now The Simpsons and video games have not been good bedfellows. For over 15 years various publishers and developers have been trying to capture the magic of The Simpsons, but have so far been largely unsuccessful. Now EA bring us the latest offering with The Simpsons Game. Not just a cash-in on the recently released movie, EA have teamed up with the creators of the show to create entirely new content in what is most likely the Best. Simpsons. Game. Ever.
Now, The Simpsons is by no means a perfect game. At its heart, it is a fairly basic action / platformer that relies on its licence to make it a good game. If you stripped The Simpsons out of the game you would be left with a fairly ordinary title. It is just as well then that EA have been able to perfectly capture the essence of the show to make this a surprisingly fun game.
The game is set in a video game version of Springfield, where you get to control the 4 main characters of the show – Bart, Homer, Lisa and Marge. Early on, the characters realise that they are in a video game and that they have super powers. Bart can turn into Bart-Man and gains Batman like abilities like the power to climb certain walls and glide. He is also fairly handy with a slingshot. Homer has belch powers and can also turn into a giant ball and roll into enemies and food. Lisa can use her saxophone to stun enemies, and can also use the powers of Buddha to move large objects. Finally there is Marge, who has perhaps my favourite power. She has the ability to form large mobs and lead riots around the town using her megaphone. This is great fun as it allows you to interact with other characters from the show. There is a certain satisfaction in directing a group containing Snake, Principle Skinner and Apu to tear down a wall.
