It is hard to believe that it has been eleven years since the first Tomb Raider game exploded onto the gaming scene. Featuring the then unknown Lara Croft, it brought to the world a gaming character who is now an icon in her own right. Not only that, the original game showed us the potential of 3D gaming, which was still a fairly new concept at the time. With sassy attitude, tight clothes and large polygon “assets”, Lara Croft was a breath of fresh air in an industry that had previously been thought as just for kids.
Eleven years on, Crystal Dynamics have given Lara Croft a birthday present by remaking her very first game, with updated next-gen graphics and levels designed around new moves and abilities she has learnt over the years. The question is, has the original game stood the test of time? Has it matured like a fine wine? Or has it grown old and stinky like a raw prawn left in the sun?
Firstly, for those who have been living under a rock and don’t know what Tomb Raider is all about, let me explain. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is at its heart an action/adventure game. You guide Lara through a series of levels, each containing a series of obstacles and puzzles for you to negotiate. These range from jumping from ledge to ledge, pulling levers and pressing buttons, to fighting large creatures like bears and raptors. All this is done in pursuit of various archaeological artifacts and other valuable items.
