When Minesweeper Flags first ventured into my horizons due to reviewing it, I was actually quite surprised. The surprise was not of excitement but more of a question; why? You would be hard pressed to find someone who owns a (windows based) pc that has not heard of Minesweeper, and probably find it just as hard to find someone who hasn't played it at least the once. Whilst so many people already know this game, it seems an odd choice by TikGames to bring an updated version to the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA)
For those that have never played Minesweeper, Minesweeper flags is a grid based game that requires you to uncover squares on the grid, all whilst avoiding any mines. Underneath each square you will find either a blank square, a number or a mine, the latter of which will end the game. The aim of Minesweeper is to mark the squares you think contain a mine. To successfully win you need to have all mines marked and uncover all squares. One main difference between classic windows Minesweeper, and Minesweeper Flags is that in campaign mode you are now given a bit more chance to win a game. The chance is that each layout will give you a few lives and you can actually blow up a certain amount of bombs before loosing the game.
Until now the game of Minesweeper has always been on a grey grid with varying sizes of a square or rectangular shape. Minesweeper Flags shakes this up by including boards of different shapes and sizes which does mix up the play compared to the more normal shapes boards. The boards are also set in multiple outdoor environments from different areas around the world, none of which really make the game feel any different from the last. The game does however look quite great that’s to its simplicity and the power the Xbox 360 offers.
